Social Security Talking Points
- Social Security is going broke. It is funded by payroll taxes of current workers to pay benefits of current retirees. In 2017, Social Security will begin to pay our more benefits then it bring in. We need to fix it sooner rather then later.
- The main reason for this financial crunch is that our society is aging, and there are fewer workers to support each retiree. Increasing life expectancy and the approaching retirement of the baby boom generation will put great pressure on Social Security in the near future.
- Between 2000 and 2025, the number of people age 65 or older is predicted to rise by 69%, while the number of workers supporting Social Security benefits will rise by only 13%.
- Every year we allow Social Security’s long-term fiscal imbalance to go unaddressed, we leave $600 billion in debt for future generations.
- The 1st step is to stop raiding Social Security of it surpluses. Congressman Ryan has presented a plan that would achieve solvency, prevent the government’s raid, give the younger workers the chance to get as good a benefit as today’s seniors, and pay off the entire Social Security debt.
